About
This website is my epitaph. You will find no truths here, for I consider truths to be ideals that reside principally with the influential, provided by their companions the priests, philosophers and mathematicians. Though such statements of truth are very appealing, I believe them to be just one element in a range of methods people use for coping with the relative uncertainties of life. I would argue that truths are illusions, illusions which have one over-riding purpose, to give the appearance of control. Control is very attractive, mostly because it offers certainty and personal security where all is flux. However, the illusion of certainty has a more cynical function; it can be employed to justify the domination of those who want to use you.
For most of the time since graduating from Leeds University in 1979 I have worked in teaching, helping late-teenagers and adults achieve their potential in life. A couple of years ago I heeded the advice of one of my teachers, Zygmunt Bauman, and took early retirement. Now it’s time to write. I hope you find the contents of my website accessible, interesting and useful. Please contribute your thoughts, for you are the judge of its value.
